Births and deaths : Dunbarton, N.H., 1829-1850 / Isaac Stearns.

Handwritten record of births and deaths in Dunbarton, N.H., organized chronologically, and descriptions of three complex medical cases. The list of births (pp. 1-37) usually does not include the names of either parents or infants. A typical entry includes sex of the child, characterization of the presentation (natural, breech) and a description of the labor (easy, quick and smart, tedious and lingering). More complicated births include details of treatment and results ("Labour hard, administered Ergot, with happy effect"). The list of deaths (pp. 40 - 90; pp.110-112) generally includes the names of adults only, not those of children. A typical entry includes date of death, age of deceased, cause of death and whether or not the deceased was a patient of Dr. Stearns'. At the end of each year's list, Dr. Stearns wrote a summary of the ages, causes of death and a brief commentary on that past year's deaths. Note especially on page 42 in the deaths of 1830: "Oct. 16 Died, Eunice M. Stearns. aged 26. Disease consumption. a Patient of mine. My wife." A description of three cases begins on page 92-96 and jumps to p. 109. These are one to two pages long and describe a burn case, a case of hydroccle and a case of colick. A table of deaths begins on p. 162 and a table of births appears on p. 167.
